Treo users (as well as other select cell phone users) can now experience GoogleMaps, satellite views and traffic (from select locations) on their devices. While the application has some shortcomings, it is a very good addition to the Treo.

Once the software is downloaded, it is installed using the Palm installer. It is setup under the "Main" category

Selecting the GoogleMaps option requires connection to the Internet. Once connected, several options are available. Detailed directions from point to point can be chosen. This is accomplished by entering the addresses in the "From" and "To" fields. Once downloaded, pressing the appropriate squares, displays the turn information. Movement in GoogleMaps is via the arrow buttons. Using the options key, satellite and traffic views can be selected.

GoogleMaps takes up about 1.2 Meg. Currently there is no facility to save directions on the Treo. Disconnecting is also an issue, as there is no option to terminate the link within GoogleMaps. To disconnect, the Web applet must be opened, then once the page is loaded disconnect can be selected from the options menu.

There is no GPS connection with GoogleMaps, even if the phone has GPS built in. If the system is going to be used to get from Point A to Point B, then a navigator should be the one using the Treo as there is no voice feedback and using the handheld while driving could cause an incident.

Overall, GoogleMaps is a very handy application to have on a mobile device such as the Treo.
